Questions

Moral Frameworks

  • Does strong negative (hedonic) utilitiarianism view the following as neutral or bad?

    • Opportunity to add positive value (positive valence) to an individual without any adding of negative value

    • Opportunity to add extremely high positive value to an individual with adding extremely low negative value (e.g., an itch)

  • Does 'consent' matter for suffering?

    • In my view suffering is suffering independent of whether one approves or disagrees.

  • Why could there be no obligation to increase happiness (positive valence)?

Understanding S-risk

  • Astronomical Suffering

    • What about the current 'astronomical suffering' that we are simply not aware of? Would they be considered s-risks?

      • Multiple-mind model i.e., every sentient being has multiple subjective experiences (e.g., millions)

      • All matter is sentient as well

  • Is extinction included in s-risks?

    • Imagining extinction occurs. A new evolutionary cycle starts and suffering comes to be i.e., repeating of s-risk potential.

    • I would argue extinction is an s-risk.

    • What are your views?

General

  • What about the view that we cannot prevent s-risk but minimize it's intensity? Does that change the approach?
